CNHS SHS RESEARCH GUIDELINES
I. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Rationale
The SHS Research Department (RD) convened to formulate standardized practices to improve research practice among SHS learners and faculty. The policies were formulated during the last meeting of the RD last November 2023. The policy is a progressive and evolving document that aims to further instill research practice consistency among practitioners, avoid prejudices, especially during assessment and evaluation, inform the public of the innovations developed by the school, and support future planning regarding its endeavors.
i. CNHS SHS Research Department (RD) – composition of the StRC, RA, PC, and PM in charge of assessing and evaluating research submitted to the department. It extends its jurisdiction to internal and external research conducted within SHS.
ii. Research Policy (RP or Policy)- a set of rules RD sets regarding implementing a paper.
iii. Strand Research Coordinator (StRC)- A strand member overseeing assessing submitted papers.
iv. Classroom Adviser (Adviser)- Respective adviser of the learners.
v. Research Adviser (RA)- Refers to the assigned otherwise nominated teacher by the learners as research mentor and critique.
vi. The Panel- evaluation body of the paper comprises one (1) PC and at least three (3) PMs of whom the paper is within their specialization.
vii. Panel Chairperson (PC)- The main facilitator and evaluator of the paper during proposal and final defense.
viii. Panel Members (PM)- Members of the PC during the evaluation of the paper.Â
ix. Proposal- A paper containing the first 3 chapters; otherwise, a research introduction and methodology with initial pages, the title page, abstract, table of contents, table of tables, figures, bibliography, and appendices.
x. Final- A paper that contains all 5 chapters; otherwise, a research introduction, methodology, results, and recommendations with initial pages such as title page, abstract, table of contents, list of tables, list of figures, bibliography, and appendices.
xi. Defense- Formally presenting the paper for assessment and evaluation.
xii. Paper- The research in progress submitted by the learners.
1. Learners may opt to write their research papers using the long or short format.
2. All strands shall follow the APA format when writing their paper.
3. HUMSS, in philosophical papers, shall follow the Chicago format for research papers.
4. The templates on the physical appearance of the paper are available in the repositories except for Chicago formatting.Â
5. All formats require preliminary pages: title page, abstract, acceptance page, acknowledgment, dedication, table of contents, list of tables, list of figures, bibliography, and appendices.
1. Long Form- includes chapters 1 to 5. Refer to the template provided.
2. Short Form—otherwise described as journal format, this format includes an Introduction, Methodology, Results and Discussion, and Conclusion. Refer to the template provided.
1. The formatting of the Bibliography and Citations follows the APA format except for philosophical research for HUMSS, which follows Chicago formatting.
2. Quantitative research requires a minimum of 5 research citations fully discussed in the paper.
3. Qualitative research requires a minimum of 10 research citations fully discussed in the paper.
4. A mixed method requires a minimum of 15 research citations fully discussed in the paper.
1. The adviser and RA evaluate a paper before the defense application.
2. The learner selects their preferred panel, given that the research falls within the panel's expertise.
3. A paper is applied for proposal/final defense 5 school days before the date. Application forms are available through the repository.
4. The panel pre-evaluates the paper (the Rubric is available).
5. The StRC assigns a designated panel secretary.
6. A defense shall follow the following procedures:
b. Endorsement of the adviser to the panel for defense.
c. Acceptance of the panel that the defense shall proceed (given it passed the standards)
d. Defense proper (15 minutes for Proposal, 25 minutes for Finals)
e. Question and Critiquing per chapter (Maximum of 1 hour)
f. Decision (Please refer to the form)
7. Any requested changes, critiques, suggestions, and comments during the defense are held permanently and cannot be ratified in the next defense cycle.
8. The learner complies with the panel through their paper and an action sheet.
1. Learners must submit one (1) hard copy of the paper to their RA as required.
2. Learners must submit a journal format of their final paper to the RD in PDF format for archiving on the internet (see format).
1. RD does not condone the use of digital tools in crafting research.
2. However, the department reminds learners and teachers that generating images through AI is not permitted.
3. AI pattern recognition using tools shall be limited to a maximum of 20%
4. Plagiarism index recognition shall be limited to a maximum of 15%.
